City workers cancel party, give to others

WALLS, MS (WMC-TV) - Employees of a Mid-South town are choosing to skip holiday festivities this year so they can do something for others.

Workers in Walls, Mississippi, a town of 800 people tucked in between Memphis and Tunica, decided to cancel their Christmas party in order to do something different.

"City Clerk Carol Grace had the idea of us foregoing the city party for ourselves and it just kind of bloomed from there," City Clerk Nancy Hatcher said. "We and myself just kind of hit the ground running."

Hatcher said all it took was a few phone calls to launch the idea of giving to others in the area that are in need.  The response from local and surrounding communities was overwhelming.

"People have been so generous, and we've had people as far as Southaven come to Walls and donate food, and we're helping five families and doing Christmas for eight children," she said.

From groceries to stuffed animals, they are prepared to give those less fortunate a wonderful Christmas holiday. Mayor Gene Alday is proud of his staff and says it will be hard to go back to the way things were.

"I don't think Walls will have anymore Christmas parties," he said. "I think this will probably be an ongoing thing.

"People that just reach deeper and they care about others that don't have...I think that's what the spirits' been about," Hatcher said.

Donated groceries and gifts will be delivered Tuesday with the help of Walls firefighters and Santa.
