Memphis church brings Christmas to families in need

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC-TV) - Hundreds of Memphis residents braved the cold temperatures on Monday waiting for what some called a Christmas miracle.

The people at New Bethel Temple Church noticed that many residents in the community couldn't afford to buy Christmas presents this year. But that all changed on Monday when Pastor Aaron Litzsey opened his doors to give away gifts.

Litzsey distributed holiday boxes packed with toys and food to help those who otherwise wouldn't be able to provide Christmas gifts for their children in these hard economic times.

Several organizations, including Feed the Children and Neighborhood Christian Center, donated the goods.

Regina Jones stood in line for hours. "It's a blessing...a blessing because if it wasn't for them, a lot of us wouldn't have anything," she said.

For hundreds of low-income families, New Bethel Temple's generosity is truly a blessing. "I've been waiting a long time in the cold, but I'm thankful for what I have," said Likita Arnett.

Litzsey says his faith called him to make this Christmas brighter for less fortunate members of the community. "It means a lot to me because I believe we're doing what Jesus Christ wants us to do," he said. "We're appreciative of all the people who've come out to receive from us...thankful we can be a blessing to them."
