Local airport delays cause holiday travel mess

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The icy start to Tuesday morning forced many delays at Memphis International Airport.

And it made holiday travel, an already stressful situation, even worse.

There were numerous delays and a few cancellations.

Flights taking off from Memphis International only added to the frustration for Bobby Owens.

Owens said, "They delayed my flight to Paducah, Kentucky."

And so Bobby Owens is stuck in Memphis waiting not because of the weather here, but because of the conditions elsewhere.

Owens said, "Not much you can do it about ice storm."

According to the flight board there were plenty of delays and a few cancellations too effecting people flying and their relatives waiting at the airport.

Carrie Harris' mom was flying out of Memphis International.

Harris said, "She was delayed how long? 9:30 10:30 an hour and a half."

Administrators at Memphis International blame most of the delays on the bad weather in connecting cities across the country.

And the other issue was getting the ice off the wings of the planes.

Memphis International Airport spokesperson John Greaud said, "The wings are cold and the rain falls on the wings then freezes and they have to de ice and remove all of that ice before they can depart."

So give yourself extra time for holiday travel as flight crews work to get you there safely.

If you have questions or concerns about your flight or your relatives' flight contact the airline, not the airport.

And airport staff ask you to arrive about 90 minutes early for your flight.
