Man arrested in drive-by shooting of 11-year-old girl

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC-TV) - On Tuesday afternoon, Memphis Police charged Jacob Mason, 32, with second degree murder in the drive-by shooting death of an 11-year-old girl last Friday.

Police tracked Mason down after investigators received information that he and a male relative of the girl had been involved in an ongoing dispute. Several witnesses also recognized Mason's vehicle leaving the scene.

He has a lengthy arrest record dating back more than a decade.

Kentaria Traylor was shot in the neck in her living room on Friday. 

"I ain't been able to get no sleep or anything," said Marcus Deener, the girl's uncle.
     
He says this holiday season will be a sad time without his niece. "It won't be no Christmas without her. I'm so used to her smiling."
    
Deener says he thinks Mason should be charged with first degree murder, in which case prosecutors would have to prove Mason intended to kill Kentaria and that the murder was premeditated.
     
But it appears Mason was looking to harm one of her relatives. In fact, police say he fired two shots at his intended victim earlier that day.
    
"And he came through here and shot at my mama's house and killed my niece," said Deener, who said he's never met Mason and is unaware of what problems he may have had with a family member.         
     
"She in heaven now...in a better place."
