Vandals destroy Olive Branch playground

OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC) - A quiet Olive Branch neighborhood was disrupted when fire destroyed a playground.

Parents say vandals playing with fire aren't the only problems plaguing this North Mississippi neighborhood.

Between the playground fire and other park problems, families fear sending their children outside to play.

Magnolia Park in Olive Branch is a peaceful place tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood.

Recently, that peace was disturbed when vandals tried to burn down the playground equipment this past Tuesday night.

An accelerant was used to set the fire.

"I think it's sad.  It's a very nice park that kids around here could take full advantage of.  I'll take my kids down there but I won't let them go anymore," said resident Amanda Boucher.

The Bouchers live right down the street from the park and say that there have been problems there for quite some time.

Brothers Charles and Steven say there has been trouble at the park since the day it opened.

"The first day it opened, we used to live down that cove and there was one night people had baseball bats and guns shooting at people like the first week it opened."

The boys don't go to the park much these days.

As for the fire, there was so much structural damage that all of the playground equipment will have to be replaced.

City officials say that will cost more that $40-thousand dollars.

For now, its safer to stay close to home.

So far no suspects are in custody for this crime.

Olive Branch Police asks anyone with information contact the department at 662-895-4111.
