MY TURN: Overwhelming grief at Christmas

May you never know the grief that overwhelms the family of Kentaria Traylor this week. Kentaria is the 11-year-old girl who was killed by a stray bullet last week as she stood inside her Frayser home looking at the family’s Christmas tree. Many of the presents under that tree should have been opened by Kentaria.

If this tragedy was an isolated event, it would still be impossible to comprehend, but it is not. Thanksgiving 2008 is the holiday that the family of 9-year-old Thomas Givand will never forget. Thomas was playing in front of his house in the Whitehaven area when he got caught in the crossfire. He was critically injured, but at least he survived.

Two weeks earlier, John Anthony Baker was not so lucky. Baker was a security officer who was home working at this laptop computer when a bullet came through his window killing him.

Unfortunately, our Christmas wish for peace on earth must begin right here in our own backyards. However well intentioned our crime fighting efforts have been, it’s obvious we’re not doing enough.

That’s my turn. Now it’s your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
