Search for survivor of DeSoto Co. wreck called off

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Authorities have called off the weekend search for the driver of a sports utility vehicle who is presumed dead after driving off an Interstate 55 bridge in DeSoto County and into the rain-swollen Coldwater River.

DeSoto County Sheriff's Department Cmdr. Lent Rice says rescue and recovery efforts were called off after emergency personnel exhausted efforts to find the victim who drove off the bridge about 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities have not released a name. The SUV is registered to a Memphis, Tenn., man.

Authorities say the SUV settled in shallow water, the driver got out of the vehicle and reached land. Authorities believe the driver may have lost his bearings in the dark and drowned after stumbling back into the river.
