Investigators look for suspects in bold smash-and-grab

CORDOVA, TN (WMC-TV) - Investigators are looking for a group of burglars responsible for a smash-and-grab ATM heist that was caught on camera early Friday.

What took thieves only seconds to smash took hours to repair Friday at the Shelby Market in Cordova afternoon.  Store owner Gabe Taklemariam said he wished the thieves would put their minds to better use.

"I wish they would get a job and work instead of taking other people's money," Taklemariam said. "We work hard for it."

Surveillance video shows how the ATM heist unfolded.  At 2:30 Friday morning, some burglars pull up to Taklemariam's store in a minivan.  On the tape, they exit the van, holding rope.  Then a burglar in a stolen F-350 truck pull up and crash into the store's front window.

In just 30 seconds, the tape shows, the burglars were able to pull the bolted ATM out of the store with the rope, load it into the van, and take off.

But, for all the ATM thieves' speed and planning, they didn't know one thing:

"Every night we take the money out," Taklemariam said.

Taklemariam said he was relieved when police told him what was gone.

"I was so happy when police told me they took the ATM," Taklemariam said. "I said 'Good it's empty' and they said 'really?'"

About three hours after the burglary, Memphis police officers spotted the truck used in the robbery in a nearby parking lot.  Detectives said it was recently stolen from a Fayette County landscaping company.

The suspects were already gone, along with the empty ATM machine.

Shelby County sheriff's deputies are looking for at least three men who stole the ATM.  If you know anything about this burglary, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
