Liberty Bowl fans pump money into local economy

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Over the past few nights, both Kentucky and East Carolina fans have packed Downtown Memphis and Beale Street.  The thousands who trekked to town are expected to pump millions of dollars into the city while enjoying the sights and celebrating the new year.

Fans of the Kentucky Wildcats and the East Carolina Pirates want their teams to win, but no one traveled to Memphis just for a football game.

After 13 hours in the car, the DiGiovanni's, East Carolina fans, couldn't wait to stop.

"The mayor of Shelby (county) would be very proud of us," Andrew DiGiovanni said.

DiGiovanni and his family visited Sun Studios, purchasing T-Shirts while they were there.

Meanwhile, East Carolina fan Mike Smith took time to see the King.

"We went to Graceland yesterday," Smith said. "Saw Elvis.  He was hiding in the back."

Others didn't wander far from Beale Street.

"They give you buckets to drink out of down there," Zack, a Kentucky fan, said, "It's crazy."

Thus, at the Liberty Bowl, there is only one winner on the field, but there are many winners in the City of Memphis.
