Jeffrey Scott trial set to begin next week

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Next Monday, jury selection is scheduled to begin in the murder trial of a popular Bolton High School teacher.

At a pretrial hearing Monday, prosecutor Karen Cook said she would search for a first degree murder conviction in the death of Ashley Scott, a Bolton High School English teacher found beaten inside her home on Thanksgiving Day in 2006.

Scott died soon after she was found in her home, and police later charged her husband, Jeffrey, with her death.

Monday, defense attorneys and prosecutors said they were ready for trial to begin.

"Monday is the date, and we're ready," defense attorney Leslie Ballin said.

In the last hearing before trial, prosecutors updated the judge on one last piece of DNA evidence they have been waiting to get back from the TBI.

"We don't have those test results back," Cook said. "However, the state is going to proceed without them.  We do not believe they are relevant to whether this person either pre-meditated to murder somebody or not."

Prosecutors and defense attorneys would not elaborate on the subject out of court.

"Because of how soon the trial is, I think it inappropriate to say anything else other than we're going to vigorously defend the case, and the jury will decide Mr. Scott's fate," Ballin said.

Action News 5 will provide complete coverage during our newscasts and online when the trial begins next week, with reporter Nick Kenney blogging the proceedings from start to finish.
