Horne: Dems should unite behind governor candidate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Former state Democratic Party chairman Doug Horne is calling for potential gubernatorial aspirants to rally behind a single strong candidate for 2010.

Horne, an affluent Knoxville businessman, has been a gubernatorial candidate before, but he withdrew from the 2002 race about a year before the primary. He says he is again considering a bid.

Horne said the other possible Democratic candidates he's urging to join behind a single candidate include U.S. Rep. Lincoln Davis, state Sen. Andy Berke, businessman Mike McWherter and former Rep. Harold Ford Jr.

Horne is the chief executive officer of Horne Properties of Knoxville. He says he'd be willing to spend his own money on a gubernatorial bid.

No Democrat has yet officially entered the race, while three Republicans have declared. Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen can't run again because of term limits.
