Porn magnates want government bailout

Following the automaker and banks, another group is asking for billions of dollars from Washington.

It sounds like a joke: the porn industry wants a $5 billion federal government bailout because times are hard and business is down.

"I think it's a joke. I don't see our government bailing that out when we got people starving," said James Sikes of Memphis.

It also sounds like a publicity stunt, but two adult industry big wigs really do plan to ask Congress for a bailout. "Girls Gone Wild" creator Joe Francis and Hustler Magazine's Larry Flynt sent out a press release saying that, with sales down and jobs at stake, the porn industry needs the government's help.

"I figure 'Why not?' They did it for the auto industry. They did it for the banks," said Flynt. "You have a lot of unhappy people out there, where sex is the furthest thing from our mind."

Flynt claims his business has decreased 25 percent.

Memphis attorney Larry Parrish, who has fought against the porn industry for decades, said in a statement sent to Action News 5: "That a question would be asked as to whether government bailout money ought to be available to purveyors of pornography is equivalent to asking whether such money should be used to bail out drug dealers."

Said Memphian Bette Mullins,"It's just silly to me. I just don't think they deserve a bailout. If they went under, I don't think it would be a bad thing."
