Council member Fullilove appears in court on fraud charge

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis City Council member stuck in a long, winding web of legal problems appeared in court Friday morning.

Janis Fullilove appeared in General Sessions Court, charged with fraudulent use of a driver's license, accused of lying on an application for a new license.

The original was confiscated in DeSoto County after a DUI in March.  Four days later, authorities claim, she applied for a new license, claiming she "lost" her old one.

In late October, Fullilove was charged and booked into jail. She lost her teaching job soon thereafter.

"Yes, it's difficult, losing your main source of income, and having to go through a number of legal challenges," she said.

Last May, Fullilove was involved in a car wreck on Highway 61.  Then, in June, she pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of substances other than alcohol.  In August, she was photographed slumped over in the drivers seat of her car.

Fullilove says she struggles with prescription pills and even went to rehab.  Friday, Fullilove said she's received support from all over the community.

"That means something, especially coming from total strangers," she said.

Fullilove plans to concentrate on her position with the Memphis City Council, while more time in front of the judge awaits.

Fullilove's attorney had no comment Friday about her case.  She is due back in court on February 19 for a preliminary hearing.
