Godwin pledges to focus on reducing burglaries

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Friday, Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin said he was beginning a campaign for tougher sentencing for criminals arrested in Memphis for burglary.

You seen the stories on Action News 5 -- one person after another the victim of a burglary or attempted burglary.  Burglary was up more than 10 percent in 2008, with more than 12,000 occurring in the city.

Will Pearcy faced off against three people in his home.

"One of them had a rifle," he said. "Pointed it at me and said, 'Give me my damn money.'"

Pearcy screamed and the men took off.  Police said the same guys headed to another house.

This week, two burglars broke into Memphian Brook Smith's home while she was at work.  Two dogs in Smith's house became the first victims.

"They took condiments out of my refrigerator -- salad dressing, mayo, peanut butter -- and poured it all over them," she said.

Godwin said stopping burglaries will be one of the main crimes he concentrates on in  2009.

"I know the budget is it tight but, I'm telling you we're paying for it anyway," Godwin said. "Our citizens are paying for it over and over again. It's time we got a handle on it."

Enough is enough, Godwin said.
