Search for missing FedEx worker intensifies

WEST MEMPHIS, Arkansas (WMC-TV) - Sheriff's deputies intensified their search on Sunday for a FedEx worker who has been missing for several weeks.

It was announced on Wednesday that investigators had discovered Ted Aya-Ay's white Nissan Sentra abandoned at a rest stop near the Hernando DeSoto Bridge shortly after his diappearance.

"There was nothing in the vehicle that appeared to be out of order, but because it was near the bridge, we wanted to come over and search the general area," said Steve Shular, spokeperson for the Shelby County Sheriff's Dept.

On Sunday, a team of 35 volunteers with the Shelby County Sheriff's Emergency Services Bureau spent hours combing the riverbanks in West Memphis. They set up a grid in a one mile radius of where they found Aya-Ay's car.

"We probably have searched somewhere around 75 to 100 acres along the river on each side, north and south of the river," said Inspector Rennie Given. "We're also looking for any clothing, and articles, telephone, wallet or anything of that nature that would lead us to believe that this gentleman may be here."

Shular says search dogs were brought in to assist in Sunday's search. "Those dogs have special training to detect human remains. And so, the dogs are out as well as the humans."

Detectives say Aya-Ay worked two jobs. On December 14, he left his southeast Shelby County home to go to work, but never made it to Kroger or FedEx.

Investigators say each clue brings them closer to closure.

"The main thing that we're trying to do today is to develop any clues that would give us some idea of his whereabouts because it's so vital that we give some closure to the family," said Shular.

The sheriff's office asks you to call (901) 545-5600 if you can help them find this missing man.
