Monday morning accident on I-40 causes massive backup

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Emergency crews responded to an automobile accident involving two tractor trailers and a car late Monday morning on Interstate 40 near Airline Road.

Three people were injured in the crash, which happened on I-40 westbound near mile marker 23.

The back of the car that was involved told the story of the impact it took.  Shelby County Fire Department spokesperson Brent Perkins said a blue tractor-trailer slammed into a red tractor trailer, which in turn slammed into the car.

"One of the tractor trailers was actually on fire," Perkins said.

A three-year-old child riding in the car was transported to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in critical condition, while her mother was transported in non-critical condition. The driver of one of the trucks, a 49-year-old man, was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition.

Westbound lanes of I-40 just west of 385 were shut down for hours after the crash as emergency crews investigated the accident and worked to clear the scene.  Other cars were detoured around the accident.  Meanwhile, motorists moved at a crawl through one eastbound lane that remained open as emergency crews worked.

Perkins said the lane closures were an unfortunate necessity.

"Part of it is due not only to the injury on the scene, but the safety of the workers," he said. "And, we had to determine whether or not the cargo posed any threat."

Investigators are still trying to determine what prompted the accident.  No charges have been filed.
