Health clinic in DeSoto County once again open

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV0 - In these tough economic times, no industry is immune from difficulties, including the healthcare industry.  Now, for patients of the DeSoto Health & Wellness clinic in Southaven, doors once closed are now open again.

Back In December, we told you that the DeSoto Health & Wellness Clinic was not seeing patients because they lost both their nurse practitioner and office manager.

Now, they are back in the business of treating patients.

We have a new nurse practitioner, we have a new nurse (and) we have a doctor on staff now that will be here two part-time days," said Billie Wilhite, president of the clinic's board of directors.

Kimberly Campbell is one of two new nurses that began working on Monday. This means that thousands of uninsured residents of DeSoto County will now have access to medical services. After treating nearly 4,000 people last year, that number is sure to rise.

"We're there to save everybody," Wilhite said. "Anybody that does not have insurance, and I think the number is growing."

Forrest Whatley is among that number, and has been needing a cat scan for sometime. For him and many others, the value of this clinic can not be underestimated.

Campbell says she is glad to care for those in need, and that clinics like this one serve an important purpose.

"When they're not able to afford insurance and don't qualify for state insurance, if there weren't a facility like this one, they wouldn't have any health care at all," she said.

Beginning this Saturday, the clinic will now be open for appointments from 8:00 am until noon. The staff anticipates they will be busy for quite sometime to come.
