MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A gunman robbed students in a classroom at LeMoyne-Owen College early Thursday afternoon, but no one was hurt.

Johnnie Watson -- president of LeMoyne-Owen College -- said 18 students were in the English classroom when a man armed with a handgun barged in Thursday.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt. Watson said the gunman -- who fled the campus immediately after the holdup -- ordered students to toss their purses and wallets on the classroom floor.

Watson said the school was immediately placed on lockdown.  That's when Cynthia White got a call from her niece.

"She was all hysterical, saying that she needed an inhaler and that the classroom had been robbed," White said.

When the robber left, student Zuhura Blake said, he took the students' sense of security with him.

"I don't even want to go out onto campus," Blake said. "I mean, are they gonna secure the whole place?"

LeMoyne-Owen has private armed security guards on campus 24/7, but according to Watson, there is no way to keep the public out.

"They've got people up and down the street trying to rob people," he said.  "They tried to rob me about three weeks ago."

Police searched the campus and the surrounding, inner-city neighborhood but made no immediate arrests. The campus was temporarily locked down and classes were canceled for the rest of the day.

The school has about 800 students and the robbery occurred in one of its main classroom buildings. Watson said the gunman, who was photographed by campus security cameras, apparently wore a wig as a disguise.

In the last month there have been 30 burglaries and six robberies within a one mile radius of the college.

Police said the suspect was between 25 and 30 years old was wearing a black leather jacket, jeans and white tennis shoes, and he may have been wearing a dark chin length wig at the time of the robbery.

If you have any information about him, call Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH.
