Millington man killed after car strikes horse

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Millington man was killed near Northaven early Monday when a horse wandered into the path of his car.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Steve Shular said Dorsey Bailey, 48, of Millington, was traveling south on North Watkins in when his car hit the horse near the intersection of Watkins and Robertson Road.

The impact killed the horse, and sent Bailey’s car out of control into a field. Bailey, the only person in the car, was declared dead at the scene.

"The impact was so strong it literally ripped the roof off the vehicle," Shular said.

Shular said deputies received calls about horses running loose in the area just moments before the crash.

"We had two that were loose along with a donkey, those were the initial reports," Shular said.

Bailey's brother, Philip, said Monday wasn't the first time horses were loose in the area.

"I feel like this guy does not keep his animals up, for them to be out," he said.

The owner of the horse, Shon Flanagan of Memphis, was charged with violating a Shelby County ordinance that prohibits livestock running at large.

"If he'd kept his horses up, my brother would be alive right now," Bailey said.

Southbound lanes of North Watkins were closed for several hours while investigators waited on heavy equipment to remove the horse, which weighed several hundred pounds.

Flanagan will appear in General Sessions Court next month.
