Companies make plans for employees to watch inauguration

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Many companies in the Mid-South are coming up with creative ways to allow their employees to watch Tuesday's inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.

For example, FedEx and First Tennessee Bank both plan to set up TV's to allow employees opportunities to watch the inauguration live.

Officials at Leboneur Children's Medical Center have also been making plans.

"As the nation is exited, I'm at the top of the list," LeBonheur volunteer manager Brenda Garner said. "This is history in the making."

Brenda Garner is one of the roughly 1,8000 employees at LeBonheurwho will be at work when history is made, but she didn't want to have to spend that historic moment in front of her computer screen, so she asked a colleague for help.

"I asked him if he would make it possible.  He said, 'I think we can do that,'" she said.  "Then, shortly after, I learned from my director not to worry. He's encouraging each hospital to make it available."

LeBonheur is inviting all of its employees, patients and their families to come and auditorium to watch the inauguration live on a big screen Tuesday.

Garner wasn't the only LeBonheur employee hoping for the chance to watch history unfold.

"This is definitely an exciting time in our nation's history," LeBonheur Director of Public Policy Maureen O'Connor said. "Many employees have expressed wanting to be part of it in some small way."

Garner says when people ask her years later about the "where were you" moment, she'll be happy to say she was at work.

"I'll be right down there," she said. "We're even having popcorn."

The Memphis Zoo is offering free admission on Tuesday, and will display live video of the inauguration in their China Theater.
