Cosmetics settlement means freebies for local shoppers

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Free makeup products were up for grabs Wednesday at several major department stores in the Mid-South, including Macy's and Dillard's.

Shopper Betty Malone said she found out about the giveaway while she was inside Macy's.

"The sells clerk told me to go for the free Estee Lauder refund," she said. "So I went, and it's wonderful!"

A sign explains the rules to customers.  As long as you purchased cosmetics from one of the retailers between 1994 and 2003, you may be entitled to a free product on a first come first serve basis.  The process involves signing your name and picking out a product worth $25.

"I couldn't understand why they were giving something away free, but, I'm always willing to accept it," Malone said.

The free products can be explained by the recent settlement of a class action lawsuit that accused several cosmetics retailers of fixing prices.  To settle the lawsuit, the retailers agreed to give away $175 million worth of products.

Malone said, if that's the case, she earned her free product.

"I'm along in years, so I've spent a lot," she said.

So has Emery Charlton.

"Hundreds, hundreds of dollars," Charlton said. "I can't even estimate how much I've spent over here."

So maybe this isn't really something for nothing.  At least, according to the lawsuit, you may have already paid for it!

The class action lawsuit entitles you to only one product, and it's only while supplies last.  The selection of available products is also limited.
