Crime spikes in Memphis neighborhood

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - In just the past week, crimes committed with weapons seem to the norm in the neighborhoods and businesses surrounding Sam Cooper and East Parkway.

This month alone, there have been four armed robberies, and many of the targets became victims of violence.

On January 13th a carjacking, assault, and armed robbery occurred at Mignon and University near Rhodes College. The following evening, an armed robbery and shooting happened in the parking lot of Los Compadres restaurant on Poplar near Parkway.  The victim was shot in the chest.

On the morning of January 20th, an armed robbery occurred just outside a coffee shop at Faxon and McLean.  One day later, there was an early morning armed robbery and shootout at the Broadway Pizza on Broad Street.

"I just feel if you don't protect what's yours, they're going to continue to do it," Broadway Pizza owner Dewana Ishi said.

Altha Perry, who owns a liquor store just a few doors down, said she's been robbed before.

"Try to watch out every minute of every day, because you just never know when they're coming back," she said.

A crime track of a one mile radius around Sam Cooper and East Parkway shows there have been 20 burglaries in the past 30 days.  Police say many of the crimes have been solved, but residents and business owners remain on alert.

"With the economy going away and people losing jobs this could happen any place," Ishi said.

Many feel it's not a matter of if, but when criminals will strike again.

A Memphis police officer assigned to this area will be addressing the Evergreen Historic District Association at a meeting Thursday night, where crime will surely be the lead topic.

The meeting will take place at 7:00pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 1738 Galloway Ave.
