State targets obesity in children

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The state boards of Health and Education are working together to tackle obesity among Mississippi children.

Board members say the logic is if children are encouraged to make healthier choices, adults will, too.

The state Department of Health and the Mississippi State Medical Association released a report card recently that put Mississippi as the fattest, least-healthy state in the nation.

Efforts are under way across the state to reverse Mississippi's persistent fat label. Schools must comply with a law that sets physical activity and health instruction requirements and restricts a la cart food sales, among other things.
