City council members focus on economy at annual retreat

Memphis City Council members discussed some of the greatest challenges facing the city at their annual retreat Saturday. The main issue on the agenda was Memphis' financial forecast.

"It's going to be tough," said councilman Harold Collins. "We're going to have to be creative in how we do things and what we fund, and prioritizing those kinds of things...but that's our job."

Businessman Fred Jones and Chamber of Commerce President John Moore addressed the council about attracting new businesses to the Bluff City.

Moore said that, despite the economic downturn, a number of businesses are looking to call Memphis home. But it's going to take a lot of hard work to make it happen.

"In the good times and in the bad times, you have to keep working at economic development," he said. "Economic development in the purest sense means creating jobs."

Council members also discussed public safety, and vowed to do everything they can to help make Memphis safer.

The council also spent some time working on building relationships with one another and the community.
