Mewtopia joins national shelters for large-scale pet adoption event

Animal shelters across the country participated in "Change a Pet's Life Day" on Saturday.

Mewtopia in East Memphis was one of 300 shelters that teamed up with Hill's Pet Nutrition in an effort to find homes for 3,000 dogs and cats.

Adoption fees were waived and starter kits were provided for new pet owners. The shelters still used the normal screening processes for suitable adopters.

Shelters are overflowing at record levels as a result of the sluggish economy.

Mid-Southerner Allen Bowers works in real estate and says he has seen the economy hurt pet owners, which led him to adopt a cat named Pop Tart.

"These people are having to abandon their house. Obviously, they're having to abandon their pets," Bowers said. "Hopefully, they'll bring them to people like Mewtopia and they can be rescued, like I did with this one."

Only 20 percent of all pets adopted in America come from shelters. Millions of shelter animals are euthanized annually.

Animal advocates ask that you make certain a pet fits your lifestyle before adopting.
