Jonesboro conveyor firm laying off 100

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - A Jonesboro manufacturer says it will lay off 100 workers because of the slow economy.

But Hytrol Conveyor Co. will still employ 600 after the cut and says it is in good position to keep servicing customers.

Hytrol President Greg Goodner says the company had too much capacity for the current economy and had to make an adjustment.

The privately-held company makes conveyors and materials handling equipment.

Hytrol says that orders began to decrease in August, and the decline accelerated as the credit crunch and economic situation worsened. Goodner says the company has worked to retain as many employees as possible.

Hytrol was founded in 1947 and has operated in Jonesboro since 1962.
