Memphis woman claims someone shot her dog

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police investigated a possible case of animal cruelty this weekend after a Mid-South woman claimed someone shot her dog.

Beverly Dixon claims shortly after she let her dog Billy out into her backyard Saturday night, she heard a gun shot.

"It was like it was a 'POW,' just a real loud 'POW,' and it scared me to death," she said.

Afterwards, Billy tracked a trail of blood into Dixon's house.  The dog, she said, had a huge wound in his neck, and was bleeding profusely.

"He wouldn't hurt anybody," she said. "He wouldn't think of hurting anybody."

Dixon filed a police report claiming the shot came from someone in a yard behind her house, but she told investigators she didn't see who shot her dog.  A staff member at the doctor's office where Billy was treated said the dog was shot with some type of BB gun.

Billy's condition has since been upgraded from critical to stable, but Dixon says her dog is facing a tough battle because of his injuries.

"He's got a bleeding blood vessel in his neck," she said. "He's going to have to have surgery and a blood transfusion."

A Memphis police spokesperson said whoever shot the dog will face charges of animal cruelty.  Meanwhile, Billy's bills are mounting.  So far, Dixon said, she's spent more than $3,500 on his treatments.
