3 Tennessee cities rank in top 10 for asthma

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Knoxville is no longer the worst place in the country for asthma sufferers, but it's still in the Top 10 just behind Chattanooga and Memphis.

That's according to a ranking of the 100 largest U.S. metro areas by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. The list is based on 12 factors, including prevalence of asthma cases, air pollution, pollen counts, public smoking bans and asthma medications prescribed per patient.

Knoxville was No. 1 in 2008, but St. Louis is tops in 2009. The group says Knoxville's improvement was due to a decline in asthma cases and pollen levels lower than the national average.

Still, Knoxville ranked No. 7 nationally - behind No. 4 Chattanooga and No. 6 Memphis.

The annual rankings are funded by a grant from the drug company AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.
