Gibson estimates ice storm caused $4M in damages

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gibson Electric Membership Corp. estimates this week's ice storms caused $4 million in damage to its distribution system in Tennessee's northwest corner.

The company was still working to restore power to some 5,500 customers Thursday evening, most of them in Obion and Lake counties.

President Dan Rodamaker said damage in Lake and Obion counties is "catastrophic" and power might not be restored to some customers until next week, despite the help of neighboring electric systems.

More than 12,600 Gibson customers have experienced electric outages since ice began covering the area Monday night. More ice moved in Wednesday morning, increasing damage and further hampering power restoration.

Jerry Bailey, general manager of Union City Electric System, said the ice storm is the most severe he has seen in his 25 years of utility service.
