Firefighters make gruesome discovery

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis firefighters made a gruesome discovery in the seven-hundred block of Alston Avenue late Thursday night.

When they arrived at the location near the intersection of Crump and Mississippi Boulevards, they spotted a fire in a heavily wooded area to the side of the property. After quickly extinguishing the fire, they discovered a burned body inside a garbage cart.

Memphis police, including homicide investigators, felony response, and crime scene investigators, were called to the scene.

"We have now started a homicide investigation," Lt. Col. J.M. Willis of the Memphis Police Department said.

Police suspect foul play, but are waiting for the Shelby County Medical Examiner's office to release an official cause of death.

Meanwhile, neighbors said the property was abandoned, but not empty, with much coming and going from squatters and drug dealers.

If you have information that could aid police, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
