Parents give optional school application process high marks

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - After years of being forced to camp out overnight in order to choose a school for their Memphis City Schools student, parents were able to apply for optional schools online this year.

Upon applying parents were issued a barcode rather than a reservation ticket, so they could come in and apply throughout the day rather than wait outside in a long line.

Memphis City Schools officials said it was a good time to streamline the process, because interest in optional schools is greater than ever.  In these tough economic times, administrators said, many parents who have been paying for a private education are now turning to the public school system.

"We'll know for sure how many really apply after today, but we've certainly seen the interest from many private school families," said optional schools director Linda Sklar.

Parents who have enrolled in optional schools in the past gave this year's process high marks, saying it was much more convenient and more organized.

The only snag came when parents had to bring a copy of their student's most recent report card.  Those report cards were supposed to come out Wednesday, but didn't because classes were canceled due to winter weather.
