Family searches for answers in pregnant woman's murder

BLYTHEVILLE, AR (WMC-TV) - Stuffed animals sat on the front porch Friday at the home where someone shot and killed a Sonya Stokes, 24, earlier this week while her two young children slept.

"We're hurting now," Stokes' sister, Sheila Horton, said Friday. "We want answers. Something has to be done."

Stokes's 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter were asleep when someone shot their mother, who was seven months pregnant, in the chest. Stokes' mother says the children didn't see anything, but knew something happened.

Wilma Stokes said her grandchildren were excited about the baby who also died in the shooting.

"My little grand son named the baby," she said. "He is 6-years-old, and he knew how to spell it."

Jasmine was going to be her name.
Blytheville police believe whoever murdered Stokes was someone she knew. Family members believe the same thing, because they said, she would never open the door to a stranger.

Wilma Stokes said Sonya had everything to live for.  Along with a new baby on the way and a good job at a local business, she was in the process of buying a house.

"No one would even have thought this could happen," Wilma Stokes said. "You hear about it but would never dream."
