MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A Shelby County employee was fired and another retired as part of an investigation into motor-vehicle-registration practices at the County Clerk's Office.
The Commercial Appeal reported Saturday that Janice R. Garrett, a clerical specialist who admitted taking up to $1,500 in cash "tips" from customers to register cars, was terminated.
Charles Nichols, chief administrative officer in the clerk's office, retired after investigators said he improperly accepted a $250 gift card from a car dealership and a $100 bill from another man.
Memphis police began an investigation last fall into how car titles and auto registrations were handled by the clerk's office. Officials say the probe will continue.
