Pilot killed in weekend crash remembered by neighbors

GERMANTOWN, TN (WMC) - Investigators have now identified the Mid-South pilot who crashed his plane into a pond this weekend.

Ray K. Davis of Germantown was killed Saturday when his single engine aircraft went down in Fayette County.

It's possible Davis was trying to land at a nearby airstrip.

But investigators still aren't sure what caused the crash.

The FAA is in Fayette County to collect evidence which they will then pass on to the NTSB.

Davis' death has hit the Germantown community where he lived hard.

Paula Prather said the death of her neighbor and friend, Ray K. Davis, is a tragic loss.

Prather said Davis died doing what he loved most, flying.

Prather said, "He was a FedEx pilot, so he's flying in and out all the time.  He's just a super nice guy, very friendly, great with his kids."

The devoted father and family man's life was cut short when his single engine private plane crashed Saturday in a wooded area near Price Road.

Prather said she couldn't believe the images on television, "I said oh no.  It's got to be Ray."

Investigators said the plane clipped a tree and crashed.

Davis was the only person on board.

Prather said, "To see it happen to him is a huge shock because he knows exactly what he's doing.  He's very educated."

While investigators spent Monday at the crash site trying to piece together clues to help determine how and why the plane may have gone down, family and friends must still come to grips with this tragedy.

They will bond together to remember Davis, who meant so much to them.

Prather said, "It's just something you never want to hear of, but it always brings everybody together at a time of loss."
