MPD DUI officer arrested near Tunica casino

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC-TV) - A Memphis police officer who has worked for the force's DUI unit is suspected of driving under the influence after he assaulted his girlfriend.

Officer Ronald Marshall, 45, was out of uniform when he posed for his mugshot early Friday morning. He was arrested following an incident at Resorts Casino in Tunica, Mississippi.
"We received a call from Resorts Casino in reference to a disturbance in the lobby," said Deputy Chief Randy Stewart of the Tunica Co. Sheriff's Dept.
Stewart says there was a physical altercation between Marshall and a woman believed to be his girlfriend. He says Marshall was gone by the time deputies arrived, but the officer was pulled over minutes later on Casino Strip Boulevard.
"Alcohol was smelled on his breath as well at that time," says Stewart.
Marshall refused both a field sobriety test at the scene and a more advanced DUI test at the jail. He was charged with DUI refusal and domestic violence.
"My understanding from some of the officers is that they had knowledge sometime during the arrest process that he was a Memphis police officer," Stewart said.
Marshall has worked for MPD's DUI Unit.

Chief Stewart believes it's always incredibly disappointing when someone who is sworn to uphold the law is accused of breaking it.
"I personally regret it when it happens to anybody in law enforcement," Stewart said. "It doesn't just affect him, it reflects something on all of us."
