Miss. state trooper acquitted of fondling youth

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A jury took only 30 minutes to acquit a Mississippi Highway Patrol master sergeant of charges that he fondled a youth in a Starkville hotel room.

Forty-six-year-old Dave Davenport of Vicksburg and his family cheered when the verdict was announced Friday.

The youth and his family wept, and declined to speak afterward with reporters.

None of the jurors looked at the youth or his family as they entered the courtroom.

He is also among witnesses accusing Davenport in Warren County, where the officer is charged with four counts of sexual battery and five of fondling. Defense attorney Austin Vollor says that trial will begin sometime in May.
