Wednesday career fair draws hundreds of job-seekers

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The economic crisis has people all over the country scrambling for jobs, including many in the Mid-South.

An estimated 800 people turned out to a job fair Wednesday at the Holiday Inn Select on Democrat Road in Memphis.

Patricia Pegues was one of the hundreds hoping to finally get an offer. Pegues said she's been searching 24/7 for a job ever since she was laid off from FedEx, after working there for 23 years.

Once an operations manager at FedEx, Pegues now works part time at Home Depot.

"It's not as many hours, and it doesn't pay near as much money," she said.

Recruiters said competition for jobs can be fierce.

"From last year to this year, we're seeing double the amount of individuals apply for the positions," said Natasha Chesnut, a recruiter for Norwegian Cruise Line. "It's very easy for us in a weekend to receive 500-1,000 resumes - just in one weekend."

Not only are there more people applying - they're more qualified.

"It makes it very easy to recruit right now," Chesnut said.

But it's not easy for people like Pegues.

"I need a job so I can take care of my family," she said. "Keep from losing my home and have my lights on and have food to eat."
