Mid-South Fair moves to temporary home

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An agreement has been reached by representatives of the Mid-South Fair to hold this year's event at a temporary site in DeSoto County, officials said Thursday.

The 153rd fair, currently scheduled for September 25 through October 4, will be held at the DeSoto Civic Center, located off Church Road in Southaven.

"The DeSoto Civic Center has acted as a great community partner for Tunica and Mississippi by offering to host the event for one year," Mid-South Fair Board president Cindy Childress said in a press release.  "We are excited to announce the Fair's move to this temporary site while our permanent home is under development in Tunica Resorts."

Officials said the location will only be temporary, and still plan to hold the 2010 fair at a new site along Highway 61 in Tunica County.  Fair organizers cited the slowing economy and the new facility's construction timeline as the reason for the delay.

"The Fair is in a time of transition with its move to Tunica, trying to configure the Fair at a one time location, while continuing to develop the permanent fairgrounds," Fair general manager Jim Rout said in a press release. "The entire northwest Mississippi area has welcomed us with open arms, and we look forward to our continued relationship with both local and state officials."

Officials said the Tunica site is developing at a rapid pace, and will include a nine acre midway, 65,000 square foot multi-purpose exhibit hall, amphitheater and areas for the fair's livestock events.
