OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - Most Olive Branch residents know Vicky Reel as a real estate expert with more than 20 years in the business. Her office is right across the street from the building she wants to occupy, as the next Olive Branch mayor.

"I think its time for some new ideas - fresh ideas - to be brought to the table when we face the challenges ahead of us," she said.

Reel turned in her qualifying papers for the post Tuesday, and will face three term incumbent Sam Rikard in the Republican primary. She is the first woman to run for mayor in Olive Branch, something she says is a special moment.

"Now that its brought out, I just think it really is an exciting time, and I feel very blessed to live in a country and a community where this kind of thing is possible," she said.

Reel is a political novice, who thinks the city is heading in the right direction. Her goal is to make sure everyone's voice is heard.

"I just think it is so important in this particular time that we're in for the actual taxpayers voice to be heard when decisions are made that effect their lives," she said.

Reel added the decision was made with prayer and family support.

"I  just decided that if God opened the door, I would walk thru it," she said. "It was wide open, so I'm thru the door and on the road."

As of Thursday, Rikard has not filed papers for re-election. Reel believes that he will, and said she and looks forward to a healthy debate of ideas and issues that will benefit the citizens of Olive Branch.

The primary election is May 5th.
