MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis police officer shot and killed a driver when a traffic stop in Raleigh took a dangerous turn on Saturday night.

Around 8:30, two uniformed police officers stopped two men in a Mercedes in the 2700 block of Hickory Bluff. The driver struck one of the officers with his vehicle.

The second officer then fired his gun at the driver.

Witnesses say they heard several gun shots, and looked outside and saw an officer limping.

"Police officer was hobbling around on this side of both vehicles," said Larry Smith, who heard the shooting. "Acted like he was in a whole lot of pain."

The driver who was shot was pronounced dead on arrival at The Med.

The officer who was struck by the vehicle was taken to The Med in non-critical condition. He has since been released.

During the ordeal, the passenger of the Mercedes jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Police are still looking for him.

Homicide and crime scene investigators collected evidence from the scene of the deadly shooting. Memphis Police Department is investigating whether or not the shooting was justified.

Both officers have been relieved of duty with pay while the shooting is being investigated.
