It's a match made in Tennis Heaven..
Too bad it didn't count Monday night at the Racquet Club.
Retired Tennis Hall of Famer Pete Sampras, winner of 14- Grand Slam Titles, not to mention a championship in one of his 6-trips to Memphis, is taking on former World's number-one player Leyton Hewitt, who sports 2 grand slam crowns himself...and he's not done yet.
They meet on Stadium Court for an Opening Night Exhibition match as part of the Regions-Morgan Keegan Championships.
At age 37-Sampras is now more of an Ambassador for the game..
And judging by the Sellout Crowd at the Racquet Club, they were only to glad to get a glimpse of his greatness.
Sampras says Hewitt, on the other hand, was serious business from the outset.
"I knew it in the Pregame." Sampras said. "He was not smiling and he was Zinging
serves in right past me. I said, 'O-K, it's On! And he got better!"
Hewitt, one of the favorites in the RMKC, wins in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Hewitt says he was glad to take the match to get in some good work on Stadium Court against one of the World's great players.
Hewitt adds knowing Sampras was the one he'd line up against for an exhibition made it easy to agree to do it.
Sampras says he was glad to see Memphis keep this tournament, one of only 11 of it's kind in the World..and said he looks forward to coming back for more events in the future.
