Off-duty deputy finds marijuana at church

BRIGHTON, TN (WMC-TV) - An off-duty officer was shocked to find marijuana inside a diaper bag.

This ounce of marijuana surprised nursery workers at Central Baptist Church in Brighton on Sunday.

"I was at church Sunday listening to the sermon when a nursery worker came and got me and advised me that I needed to look at something in the nursery," Tipton County Sheriff's Deputy Keith Saemenes said.

That something turned out to be more than the off duty deputy bargained for.

"I found a large amount of marijuana in the baby's bag in the baby wipes," Saemenes said.

As soon as he recognized the drugs, Saemenes called on-duty officers to investigate.

"I had no idea - I thought maybe something could have been wrong with the children or something like that," he said. "Upon looking at the drugs, I told them to stay right there."

Once the drugs were discovered, deputies told the baby's grandparents, who were visiting the church.  The baby's father, Brandon Landrum, wasn't at church but admitted to owning the drugs.

Landrum was arrested and charged with drug possession.

"I'm just praying for him and praying for the grandparents and parents," Saemenes said.

The deputy added he feels like he was at the right place at the right time.

"Nothing like this happens at our church," he said. "It's a very loving church."

Landrum, is set to appear in a Tipton county court March 3rd.  The baby is now living with her grandparents.
