Andy's Restaurant Scorecard: scores as of 2/8/09

Andy needed a translator at Mariscos El Quetzal, 5855 Winchester Rd. in Hickory Hill, Southeast Memphis.

According to a Memphis-Shelby County Health Department inspection report, the restaurant failed its most recent inspection with a score of 68.  The report cites "mold inside the ice machine," "no lids on the containers of food" and a "wastewater leak," among other critical violations.

A woman at the restaurant answered Andy's phone call, but she could not carry on a phone conversation in English.  Andy visited the restaurant and greeted who appeared to be the same woman.

Again, major language barrier.

She managed to say she'd have the manager call Andy.  An unidentified man did call Andy on behalf of Mariscos El Quetzal, but again, broken English.  He did manage to say he'd have the restaurant's owner call Andy.

No call.

Mariscos El Quetzal is still awaiting the health department's follow up inspection.

THIS WEEK'S BIG TIP:  Bryant's Breakfast, 3965 Summer Ave, Memphis, TN 38122 901-324-7494

Our Restaurant Scorecard viewers named Bryant's as the Best Breakfast in our Scorecard nominations.  Apparently, other folks have noticed.  Esquire magazine just named Bryant's as one of the best breakfasts in the COUNTRY.  While Andy visited, locals told him they come for the biscuits, grits and gravy (all HUGE portions for incredibly reasonable prices).  Boston Celtics co-owner Jim Pallotta was there, chowing on the sausage omelet.  He said he comes all the way from Beantown just to eat at Bryant's!

WHAT ANDY LIKES:  The "Everything Omelet," the coffee, the biscuits, the cinnamon rolls.
