Stop Thief! Cigarette Caper in Southaven, MS

These two do one nasty, sloppy job of getting caught on the Action News 5 Scam Cam.

Both of them walk out of the bathroom of the Circle K -- 1630 Mississippi Valley Blvd. and Highway 51 in Southaven, MS -- and head straight for the storage room.

The Scam Cam captures them stuffing carton after carton of cigarettes inside their jackets.  Lt. Mark Little of the Southaven Police Department and member of the ALERT Squad (Area Law Enforcement & Retailers Team) says they took more than $600 in cigarettes.

But one of them freaks out when a Southaven police car pulls up to the store's gas pumps.  Little says it appears he thinks the store's clerk is on to them and has called the cops.

"You can see him dumping out all the merchandise he got," says Little, referring to the Scam Cam footage.  "The fact that he concealed it, it's a possibility that we can charge him with theft. If not, we can charge him with what's called an attempt to commit ...what we call grand larceny or felony shoplifting."

Detectives were also able to make out a Mississippi tag number on the back of the deep purple mini-van the suspects used to escape the store:  DBX 739.  Little says the tag traces back to a Horn Lake, MS, apartment complex.  He says detectives determined that the two suspects do not live there, and if they ever did, it was a long time ago.
