HERNANDO, MS (WMC-TV) - Three Hernando police officers are in trouble for allegedly playing golf when they were on duty.

"If indeed this allegation is true, its not acceptable, and I don't see it as an acceptable thing to do," Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson said Wednesday.

The alleged incident happened on February 16th. Hernando Police Chief Mike Riley said he hoped his department would not be judged harshly based on the actions of a few.

"I don't want anybody to lose faith in the police department or other police officers here, because we have some really good officers here," Riley said. "They're dedicated to the job."

Per department policy, the incident is under investigation, and an outcome will be decided by the Hernando Board of Alderman in an executive session next Tuesday. Riley said his law enforcement officers are held to a higher standard.

"Law enforcement is a way of life more than it is a job," he said.

Hernando resident Lee Ann Elrod said if the allegations are true, the officers' behavior betrays the public trust and they should be held accountable.
"It is a betrayal of the public trust, because you wonder what else has happened that maybe we don't know about," Elrod said. "They should be held accountable for that."

Johnson promised swift action.

"We are going to be handling this as quickly and as the process in place will allow us to do," he said.

The officers involved in the alleged incident have not been identified.
