Memphians react to Obama's speech

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - There was no shortage of opinions Wednesday as Memphis residents reacted to President Barack Obama's Tuesday night speech on the economy.

Along the trolley line on Main Street Wednesday, some Memphians said they were inspired by the president's address to congress.

"It's good to have something to get the economy going again," Memphian Shawn Hiley said.

But for some others we talked to, it wasn't enough.

"I'm not entirely pleased with his stimulus package," Linda Keith said. "I'd like to see less for the corporation, and more for the people."

The feelings voiced by Memphians who watched the address were of special interest to Joe Leyden, of Ireland.  While enjoying the sights downtown - Leyden said that people around the world are hoping that the American people get behind President Obama's stimulus package.

"Give him a chance," Leyden said. "He's only been here a month. He's what they call on the honeymoon."

Meanwhile back on Main Street, some were already promising to follow Obama's advice to spend or open businesses to help the economy.

Others, however, vowed to take the 'wait and see' approach.

"Will I spend more personally than I am already spending?  I doubt it," Hiley said. "I'd rather wait and see and make sure the tide is turning before I let loose some hard earned dollars."
