MY TURN: Too quick to pick a fight

As you know, many of your neighbors are far too willing to pick a fight, sometimes with deadly consequences. A parking space flap one night and a man is dead. A fender bender a couple of weeks later and somebody else dies. And of course, children are quick studies and so quite a bit of violence has taken place in our schools.

Against that backdrop, the announcement of a Memphis City School program to teach nonviolence sounds like a great idea. Within a year, the city school system plans to teach 50,000 students and faculty members about the principles of nonviolence. The curriculum is based on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and it has the goal of showing students that there are alternatives to violence.

One of the city school principals said he was hoping the program would be so successful that it would even spill out into the surrounding neighborhood this summer. We sure hope he's right. Any success achieved by the program would be a wonderful, living tribute to Dr. King's legacy.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
