Accidents snag Friday morning traffic

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Mother nature was likely to blame for a major mess on Memphis roadways early Friday morning. Several accidents along I-240 caused major traffic delays, one involving a daycare van.

Medics and emergency crews flooded I-240 southbound near Norris Road when the daycare van crashed into two other cars.  Then, as traffic backed up, a MATA bus crashed into two cars about one hundred yards away.

"Been sitting here for two hours," driver James Evans said. "Last two and a half hours at most."

Officials said the only fortunate thing was the wrecks happened just before 6 o'clock, when nobody was onboard either the day care van or the MATA bus.

In all, six people had to be taken to the hospital for minor injuries, while drivers looked for ways to pass the time.

"Drivers were getting out and talking to each other 'cause we knew we weren't going to go anywhere," Horn Lake High School teacher Kenny Graham said.

Others passed the time as if it were a normal morning.

"Just been listening to radio talking on the phone, the usual," driver Almeda Burgess said.
Many drivers were disappointed to be waiting, but relieved there was no one on board the buses and all injuries were considered minor.

"Thank God," driver Van Goodman said. "I'm glad for that."
