Bishop Byrne wins first girls' state title, 42-39
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Rachaal Clayton scored 11 points as
Bishop Byrne exacted revenge on Lausanne to win the Tennessee
Secondary School Athletic Association Division II-A girls'
basketball state championship Friday night.
The Red Knights, who lost to Lausanne three times during the
season, collected the school's first state girls' title with the
win at David Lipscomb's Allen Arena.
Bishop Byrne used an aggressive, pressure defense to stymie the
defending state champs and Miss Basketball winner Lauren Avant, who
finished with just six points.
The Lady Lynx won the three previous meetings by an average of
20 points, but Byrne's tough defense and clutch foul shooting down
the stretch were the difference.
Clayton nailed both ends of a one-and-one with 18 seconds left
to put Byrne up 41-38, then two last-ditch efforts to tie by
Lausanne were off the mark.
Monica Miller led the Lady Lynx with 21 points.
