MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A late winter blast of cold weather blanketed the Mid-South with snow Saturday.

As snow began to fall across the city of Memphis, people were shocked by how quickly it accumulated.

"We were going to go to the Fire Museum and see some of the other sights downtown, and thought we wouldn't have any problem whatsoever, and came out... wow," Jody Ewyer said.

Tiger fans, too were surprised by the thousand as the left FedExForum after a noon game there.

"We didn't know it would be like this," Ashley King said. "Though it would be later this afternoon."

In the city of Bartlett, shoppers at a Schnucks grocery were not to be deterred.

"I'm not too concerned about the weather," shopper Latrice Cleaves said. "It's not gonna make me or break me....I had to come out here and get some groceries"

For others, like Douglas Malone, the snow altered plans a bit.

"I wanted to shop earlier, but when I looked outside I saw the snow so I couldn't come, then as I expected, it's a lot better now," Malone said.

The snowfall made many roads treacherous, and officials urged motorists to stay off roads if possible.  The snow also prompted many Mid-South churches to cancel or delay Sunday morning services.

Action News 5 Meteorologist John Bryant said parts of Haywood, Lauderdale, and Mississippi counties saw eight inches of snow or more Saturday.
